History of formation

The 54th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after Hetman Ivan Mazepa is one of the most combat-capable units of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, defending the independence and territorial integrity of the state since 2014.

The unit is named after the outstanding Ukrainian military and statesman Hetman Ivan Mazepa, who embodied the idea of an independent and strong Ukraine.

The formation of the brigade began in December 2014. It was built around experienced soldiers from other combat units, as well as volunteers and mobilized reservists.

Combat path

From its first days, the brigade took an active part in combat operations in the Donetsk direction. Among its most notable operations are the battles on the Svitlodarsk salient and successful raids to destroy enemy positions and equipment.

During the full-scale invasion in 2022, the brigade was among the first to engage the enemy, defending the eastern borders. Its soldiers effectively use both Ukrainian and Western weapons, including artillery, UAVs, anti-tank systems and modern communications.
